History of the Instrument

A rare and highly attractive violin attributed to Giuseppe and Carlo Tononi, made in Bologna circa 1700–1710, from a pivotal moment in the Tononi family’s development and in the broader evolution of Northern Italian violin making. Instruments from this period capture the Bolognese tradition at its most compelling: elegant in outline, confident in construction, and designed first and foremost for sound.

This violin reflects the Tononi workshop’s hallmark blend of refinement and strength—clean, purposeful workmanship paired with a model that favors breadth and resonance. The result is an instrument with a warm, centered tonal core and excellent carrying power, offering the kind of immediacy and flexibility that suits both solo and ensemble playing.

With its distinctive Northern Italian character and its place within one of Italy’s most important maker lineages, this is a compelling opportunity for players and collectors seeking an instrument of real personality, history, and performance capability.

Available by appointment in New York City.
