History of the Instrument
Alberto Blanchi was born in 1871 in Peille-Poglia, a village in the Nice hinterland. Initially trained as a violinist, he followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather to become a violin maker. His father, Augustin, reportedly learned the craft in the Guadagnini family workshop in Turin when Nice was still part of Piedmont-Sardinia. The Blanchi family also had ties to Pierre Pacherel, who settled in Nice after working for Pressenda in Turin. Blanchi would go on to win gold medals for his work in Milan in 1906 and in London in 1908. Later in life, he received assistance from his nephew, Pierre Gaggini.
This quartet of instruments, styled after the decorated "Rode" Stradivari, was made for Mr. P. A. Concaris in Cremona.
