History of the Instrument
Born in Vicenza in 1878, Gaetano Sgarabotto originally trained as a woodcarver before journeying to Milan to work for the Bisiach family. There he worked until 1905, when he returned to his hometown to work for the next 20 years before moving to Parma in 1926. It was there that he taught at the Parma School of Violin Making from 1928 until 1932. He then migrated back to Vicenza and shortly thereafter to Brescia, but ultimately settled again in Parma, where he spent the remainder of his days. He died there in 1959.
Sgarabotto won numerous awards in Vicenza, Turin, Paris, Milan, Bruxelles, and Rome. He exhibited a quartet in Cremona in 1937, which can still be seen at the Museo di Violino. He was given the title of 'Cavaliere' in 1918 in recognition of his many achievements. His work was varied, drawing inspiration from various classical models and copying important makers, including this copy of Stefano Scarampella. This instrument exists today in a perfect state of preservation, with a sound that rivals that of the maker he was imitating.
