History of the Instrument

Nicolas Rémy Maire was born in Mirecourt in 1800, Maire trained in the Lafleur workshop and served his apprenticeship with Pajeot in Mirecourt, closely following Pajeot's style.

In 1826, he opened his own workshop in Mirecourt, eventually relocating to Paris in 1853. In addition to his own production, he collaborated with Gand, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, and Georges Chanot. During the 1850's, Maire was influenced by Dominique Peccatte, resulting in bows that closely resembled Peccatte's work from that period. After 1860, he transitioned to a lighter model, a shift mirrored by many of his contemporaries. Maire did not always stamp his bows, and among his students was Jean Joseph Martin. Although his work varies in style, it consistently showcases fine craftsmanship. He passed away in Paris in 1878.

This particular bow comes to us from a private collection, mounted in a stunningly decorated mother of pearl frog, with inlaid mother of pearl designs in ebony veneer on the handle.
