History of the Instrument
This violin by Douglas Cox, made in Brattleboro in 2021, represents the rare combination that defines the best contemporary American instruments: classical discipline, deep restoration intelligence, and a tonal concept shaped by decades of hands-on work with demanding professional players. Offered in mint condition, it presents Cox’s work with exceptional clarity—fresh, intact, and uncompromised.
Cox received his early training at the State Violin Making School in Mittenwald, Germany, in the late 1960s—an education known for its rigor and insistence on clean, structurally sound workmanship. He then spent ten years as head of the repair department and chief restorer for J. Bradley Taylor, Inc. in Boston, servicing many of the finest instruments in New England. Since 1981, he has devoted himself to making fine new instruments, bringing to the bench the discipline of his training, the eye of a restorer, and extensive experience in tonal adjustment.
A defining feature of Cox’s approach is his willingness to push beyond the “standard model” by building close copies of unusual and noteworthy master instruments—an ongoing study that keeps his work both historically informed and musically pragmatic. The scale of his output is also remarkable: since 1981, Cox has built over 1000 instruments, and his work has received Violin Society of America recognition and is played by artists internationally.
Players often describe Cox instruments in the most meaningful terms possible: not as “good for new,” but as convincingly mature in voice and feel. As violinist Jaime Laredo has said of his Cox violin: “It is a joy and a pleasure to play on. It feels and sounds like I am playing on a great old Italian violin.” In a 2021 example preserved in mint condition, that promise—modern reliability with a classically satisfying musical result—becomes especially compelling.
