History of the Instrument
This contemporary violin by Louis Gord, made in Montreal in 2026, represents the modern Canadian school at a particularly confident moment: a new generation of makers whose work is informed by rigorous European training, serious restoration exposure, and an uncompromising focus on sound.
Gord’s background is unusually complete. He studied viola performance for twelve years at the Conservatory in Angers, then graduated in 2012 from the International Violin Making School of Mirecourt (France). During his training and early professional years, he worked in and alongside respected shops including Jérôme Doucet (Angers) and Vatelot-Rampal (Paris), and later with makers Marcus Klimke, Antoine Cauche, and Patrick Robin (with Viateur Roy). In 2014, he became the assistant to Isabelle Wilbaux in Montreal, a formative period that also brought early competitive recognition.
His work has been distinguished at the highest level of contemporary making. At the Violin Society of America (VSA) competition, Gord and Wilbaux received Certificates of Merit in 2014 for a viola (for both workmanship and sonority). Gord later received a Certificate of Merit for Workmanship at the 2018 VSA competition, and in 2022 was awarded a Silver Medal for Artisanship for a viola. Since June 2019, he has worked full-time on his own creations. He is also active in the craft community as a board member (Treasurer) of Canada’s Maker’s Forum, and as a founder member and secretary of Collectif Lutherie Montreal, a shared workshop and documentation center.
Offered here in brand-new, mint condition, this 2026 violin delivers the central advantage of a top-tier contemporary instrument: modern structural confidence, transparent authorship, and an instrument whose tonal identity is the result of deliberate design rather than historical accident. For the musician seeking a serious modern violin, and for the connoisseur who values living makers at the top of their craft, this Louis Gord is an especially compelling example.
